Calling (Any and) All Females

Here is a recent email sent to all graduate students in the UCLA Computer Science Department with the subject line “Grant of $1000 to CSD female CS graduate student”:

To CSD female graduate student:

Yahoo! is offering a grant of $1000 to our CSD for a selected outstanding female CS graduate student to attend the 2009 Grace Hopper conference to be held in Tucson, AZ from September 30 to October 3

Attending this conference is a very good experience and opportunity to meet outstanding CSD female students from many other universities, and participate in a special a pool side event sponsored by Yahoo for the grant recipients from the few selected universities (including U of Illinois, MIT, and others).

If you are interested in earning this grant to attend, please email Prof. Cardenas by this coming Wednesday September 16 your detailed resume including academic performance and in a few words why you would like to attend. I &CSD will selected the female CSD student to support. Upon actual attendance, CSD will give you this Yahoo $1000 grant.

Note that the grant should be enough to cover the large majority of reasonable expenses if arrangements are made asap for low fares: economy air travel, conference registration, and hotel lodging indicated in the conference web site.

I couldn’t help but notice the use of the singular in the subject line and salutation.  Freudian slip?

“I’m a female computer science graduate student.”

Fortunately, they will *not* be performing a gender test.
